Packing and Storing Tips

Packing Tips
- Completely fill each box with the heaviest items on the bottom.
- CAUTION: It is illegal to store materials that are HAZARDOUS or COMBUSTIBLE such as gasoline, solvents, paint, etc. Drain all gasoline from lawn mowers, power tools, boats, snowmobiles, etc.
- Label ALL boxes for easy identification.
- Use uniform or similar size boxes for easy stacking. BE SURE they're strong enough to hold 25-30 lbs. (It is best not to put too much in each box.)
- Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in packing paper and placed in dish pack boxes.
- Furniture with drawers can be utilized as storage places for small items. Wrap items in tablecloths, towels or blankets to prevent breakage.
- Large appliances make excellent "packing cases" for blankets, towels, tablecloths and clothes.
- Shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses can be packed together in empty trashcans. Stack extra cans inside one another.
- Spray or rub wood furniture with a furniture polish and cover with a drop cloth or sheets.
- Apply a light coat of oil to exposed metals to prevent rusting.
Wedge all appliance doors open to allow free circulation of air. Make sure all appliances are cleaned and thoroughly dry before storing.
- List contents of boxes on all four sides, number the boxes, seal with packing tape. Make a list of the labeled boxes for easy reference when you need to locate your property.
Storing Tips
- Plan your storage space. Place items that you need frequently in the front. Allow for walkways.
- Insure your goods while in storage. If your homeowner's/ business insurance does not cover items in storage, ask the manager about self storage insurance.
- Keep an inventory of your stored items in a safe place at home or in a safe deposit box.
- Leave a small space between the wall and your storage items to allow air to circulate freely.
- Pack your boxes and other items as close together as possible to avoid the accumulation of moisture.
- Use a HIGH QUALITY lock, for your unit to keep your valuables as safe as possible.
- Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier boxes.
